We no longer dare set foot in the Salam Palace ofTaroudant. The welcome, if it can be called that, was provided by a dragon disguised as a woman. A happy change of style had briefly intervened: this legendary hotel had regained its luster, at least in the plate of its restaurant. But wreckage: the legend has faded. If there are still the walls, sublime although in disrepair, the restoration has become nondescript.
A passage, in November 2015, proved to be alarming. On a sign placed at the entrance, the employees announced that they had not been paid for several months and that consequently some of them were on strike.
Subsequent passages have unfortunately confirmed this impression: the Salam Palace is definitely no longer what it was. The fault, according to what is said in Taroudant, of the heirs who cannot come to an agreement and who would again refused a completely correct purchase offer...
To eat in Taroudant, another address has emerged:Dar Zitoun, who is perfect.
A unique charm
Former residence of the caïd of Taroudant, the Salam Palace is nestled in the ramparts of the other Red City and is part of the kasba, hence the unique charm that continues to emerge despite everything. It is easily found, at the main crossroads outside the walls,45 minutes after leaving the Jardin aux Etoiles.
Atmosphere, atmosphere...
Salam Palace has sunk so low, as evidenced bycertain opinions published on Tripadivor, that one can fear for the very existence of this jewel. Such a waste!
The fact remains that, at night, you can still feel an air of magic floating there. We would not be surprised to see the ghost of Marguerite Yourcenar appear at the edge of an alley. Atmosphere, atmosphere...
