Where can I buy food and drinks, as well as Moroccan handicraft souvenirs?

Find

alcohol

Guests staying at our villa for rent fully enjoy the tranquility of the Ouled Alioua hamlet. However, there are small Moroccan shops nearby selling essential items, such as bread (Moroccan flatbreads for 3 dirhams - 30 euro cents) for breakfast.

The first bakery is a 5-minute drive away (head towards Ouled Teima and cross the road before the mosque on the main road). Watching these artisans at work is quite a spectacle. It's well worth trying the Berber bread (usually 5 dirhams - about 50 euro cents). Called tafarnout, it's made with a thinner, longer-baked flatbread. Prefer a French baguette? In either case, ask Ayoub at your riad for directions; he'll tell you where to find one or even bring some for you.

The spectacle of the souk

The nearest souk is located in the neighboring town of Ouled Teima (population 100,000). It's a 10-minute drive away (opposite the mosque, on the main road). Food products—the fruits and vegetables are fantastic!—and all sorts of everyday items can be bought there. For a non-Moroccan, this visit is a fascinating discovery, albeit with a few surprises. There's absolutely no signage. So it takes a lot of time to figure out where to find specific products.

Supermarkets

For large supermarkets, you have to go to Agadir . The closest is Carrefour (groceries, but also clothing and household goods). It has become the leading supermarket in Agadir. It's a 35-minute drive away. Agadir also has four Carrefour Markets. Asswak Assalam is located a little further away (45-50 minutes). The Marjane department store is 50 minutes away (in Bensergao, next to the Royal Palace). Another Marjane store has opened in Inezgane, but it's less pleasant than the one in Bensergao.

We recommend Carrefour, Asswak Assalam, and Marjane. However, the latter two do not sell alcohol. Marjane, having come under Qatari ownership, has indeed stopped selling it.

On the other hand, you can buy European and Moroccan wines (often very good) at the Carrefour supermarket, in Sela Park, about 35 minutes from our riad, as well as in the center of Agadir (near the Town Hall), at Uniprix, at Anaprix, very close to Uniprix, and at Nicolas.

Agadir boasts the largest souk in Morocco, called Souk El Had . It sprawls across several hectares in the heart of the city. You can find just about anything there, and it's relatively well signposted. If you get lost, simply ask passersby for directions. Moroccans are always happy to help!

Fish and seafood

All supermarkets sell fish and seafood. The most authentic way to buy it—and the cheapest!—is to go to the fish market in the center of Agadir or to the fishing port itself (next to the marina), where you'll also find popular and friendly restaurants . Ouled Teima has a good municipal fish market.

Our advice
     Good deal

Where to buy your wine, beer and spirits?

Islam regards excessive alcohol consumption as a sin. Consequently, alcohol is not available on every street corner. Agadir is, however, a major tourist destination. Moreover, a significant proportion of Moroccans enjoy alcoholic drinks (with the exception, however, of the month of Ramadan).

- Carrefour stores: Carrefour Sela Park supermarket (see our map above), Carrefour in the Dakhla district, near the universities, Talborjt, the old town, and the Houda district.

- Hyper U supermarket.

- Uniprix and Anaprix, near City Hall and Place Kamal.

- Nicolas shop (see below).

Note: the supermarket Marjane, which fell into Qatari hands, banned alcohol from its shelves.

The prices are comparable to those practiced in Europe. Moroccan wines - most of which are excellent - are generally less expensive than wines from Europe.

Nicolas store next to Bamboo Thai

The  most comprehensive  wine & spirits store in Agadir  is undoubtedly the boutique  Nicholas. OOpened at the end of June 2017, this  is located next to the restaurant Bamboo Thai, at the end of the avenue  Hassan II.

As our Google Maps shows, it can be reached in 50 minutes from the Jardin aux Etoiles.

Very well laid out, the Nicolas boutique offers 1,500 different wines and spirits.
