  • Why Agadir is truly a tourist city

Why is the seaside resort of Agadir a tourist destination whose reputation extends far beyond the golden sands of its 8-kilometer-long beach ? Because, in February 2020, King Mohammed VI presided over the presentation ceremony of the Agadir Urban Development Program 2020-2024 , which has since been superbly implemented and expanded. The result? The city's beauty has steadily increased , and the number of impressive projects has multiplied, with the public sector generating dynamism in the private sector. Tourism takes precedence, but the city's residents are not forgotten. An impressive number of sports fields , for example, have appeared in the neighborhoods. As the city's president, Aziz Akhannouch , who is also the head of government, explains, Agadir intends to be a city of sport, but also of culture . The website of your riad near Agadir is following this development very closely. He explains, for example, what to do in Agadir in five days. Tourist attractions have appeared in large numbers, sometimes even before 2020. This is the case of the dolphin pool ( our photo ) called Dolphin World , located in the Anza district and which is very popular with children and their parents, at least those who do not prioritize animal protection. They prefer the mini-safari organized in the Souss-Massa National Park , which allows you to admire gazelles, antelopes and ostriches up close, as part of a reasoned effort to repopulate these animals. When the weather is hot, younger children can enjoy the slides and other water features at Atlantica Water Park in Imi Ouadar, north of Agadir. However, a new, more attractive and modern water park of this type has recently opened in the hills above Agadir. Starting in the summer of 2024, the Waterpark at Danialand amusement park ( see video above ) is attracting visitors with its high-quality facilities, despite relatively high prices. Thrill-seekers of all ages will appreciate a corner of the Sahara 68 kilometers north of Agadir: the Tamri Timlalin sand dunes . There, you can enjoy quad biking while admiring the ocean just below. Breathtaking! The more adventurous can try their hand at sandboarding ( see our photo ). A real challenge! In the evening, you have plenty of options! One of Agadir's trendiest clubs is Papagayo . This nightclub is located in the excellent Riu Tikida Beach Hotel. On a different note: if you're lucky, you might catch one of the opening nights at the intimate concert venue Jazzawiya . You're guaranteed a funky and unforgettable experience. Our top pick is the Chems Ayour Arab and Berber folklore evening. Just fifteen minutes from your riad rental in Agadir, Le Jardin aux Etoiles, you'll be welcomed by horsemen and the Dekka Merrackchia and Gnawa troupes. This will be followed by a musical performance from a snake charmer and the traditional Berber bread called tafernout. A highlight: dinner in traditional Berber tents with folk entertainment around the tables. The evening concludes outdoors with a fantasia (a traditional equestrian display) featuring acrobats, fire-eaters, and even a belly dancer.   All these attractions that make Agadir a tourist city can ideally be enjoyed while relaxing, between excursions, in the greatest peace and quiet, at the Jardin aux Etoiles . The swimming pool ( see photo ), the immense garden, the areas dedicated to ping-pong and pétanque , and, as an option, Fatima's excellent cuisine will delight you. • Danialand Waterpark in Agadir opens: high level of services... and prices

According to its promoter Abdelaziz Houays, it was due to open in the second half of May 2024. Finally, the necessary authorisations having delayed the operation, the Waterpark at the Danialand Amusement Park in Agadir was inaugurated on 21 June. The first visitors are praising the high level of services ( our image ) provided by the first stage in the creation of this huge park, while, unsurprisingly, some are objecting to the entrance fees, which some consider excessive, but which are in fact in line with the offer. The inauguration was presided over by the President of the City of Agadir, Aziz Akhannouch , who is also President of the Moroccan Government ( our photo , listening to the promoter's explanations). The Governor of the Region, Saïd Amzazi, and the President of the Regional Council, Karim Achengli, also took part in the event, from the front line. The infrastructure on offer is right up there with the top-of-the-range that is advertised. Such is the case with these slides ( our photo ) grouped together under a privateer banner. They're colourful, imaginative and full of fun. It's hard not to admit it! The highest tower is 17 metres high and offers 16 attractions ( our photo ). A kilometre-long slow-moving river leads around the tower. Instagram shows a video. As we have already pointed out, the two planes destined to become restaurants, which can be seen in the background, will not be opened until next year. Less sophisticated restaurants will be available from this summer. Entrance fees? As our table shows, they come to 180 dh, or 17 euros (140 dh for children under 1 m 30). There are two prices for using the cable cars and the shuttle bus from the Kasbah to the Waterpark: 250 dh (24 euros) for nationals and 275 dh (26 euros) for foreigners. These prices are considered unaffordable for the average Moroccan, which is a pity. They are also said to be a deterrent to keeping the facilities in excellent condition. A debate that is not yet over... The Waterpark can also be reached by car, from the foot of the Kasbah, via a road that forks left halfway up towards Danialand. Two large car parks are available ( our image ). VIP and VVIP (very, very important person) packs are also on sale. These include the use of lockers and deckchairs, known as relax.

  • Hyper U supermarket arrives in Agadir

The Hyper U supermarket is coming to Agadir. Its opening was initially announced for the end of August 2025. It will finally take place on Tuesday 16 September. In Morocco, the first supermarket in this chain opened in April 2024 in Casablanca ( see photo ). The one in Agadir will be the second. However, smaller U stores are also operating in Casablanca, Rabat and Salé . The Hyper U in Agadir, which is similar in size to a Super U in France, is currently being built next to the Kitea furniture store and one of the city's three McDonald's restaurants, near one of the entrances to the Grand Stade Adrar ( see our map ). From the newly named North-East Ring Road, it can be accessed via the roundabout east of the Grand Stade, which leads to the Akdital clinic. Compared to Carrefour, Marjane and Asswak Assalam supermarkets ( see photo ), which are already established in Agadir, the U cooperative is known for offering lower prices. However, some highly critical reviews of the Casablanca supermarket cast doubt on this . The fact remains that U stores are organised on a cooperative model, which in principle is more consumer-oriented than shareholder-oriented.

  • New Bird Valley of Agadir under construction: the magic becomes clearer

In major works since last September, the new Bird Valley of Agadir based on the principle of zoo-immersion is taking shape. New images broadcast on the site of the territorial commune show that the expected magic is becoming clearer. The image above represents the huge aviary inside which the visitor can move around and rub shoulders with multicolored parrots and pink flamingos, among other volatiles. Installed on Boulevard du 20-Août, where the departure of the little tourist train , the building of the ticket office will take the form of a large white bird opening its wings to take off ( our image ). A complete change compared to the old installation! The entry price is not yet known. A large footbridge will allow you to cross, at height, the areas reserved for ostriches (on the left in our image ). On the right, we can see the llama park. The basic structure of the walkway will be metallic, but wood will be widely used to cover this aerial walk which will wind over an area of 2.7 hectares. Sixty-nine different species are announced to animate this zoological circuit, which should allow interaction with animals ( our image ). The opening of the resurrected Bird Valley was hoped for at the end of this new year. However, according to the latest news, you will have to wait until the first quarter of 2025.

  • The destruction of the fishing village of Tifnit felt like a very deep wound

The month of December 2023 will forever be marked with a black stone, very black, in the history of the fishing village of Tifnit , located about forty kilometers south of Agadir , inside the Souss Massa National Park . On the 6th, the director of equipment for the province of Chtouka Aït Baha, Mohamed Zouhair, disseminates information, demanding the restoration of illegally built homes to their original condition, within five days. Stupor, collapse and incomprehension of the approximately 200 more or less regular inhabitants of the village, mainly fishermen, some of whose families have lived there for generations. The heart tight, some flee Tifnit with their meager possessions. Defenders of the village, mainly foreigners, launched a petition and organized a demonstration. Calls to the authorities go unheeded. On the 25th, no voluntary demolition having taken place, the mechanical excavators came into action and destroyed everything, but really everything, in their path ( see above video Michel Terrier). On December 28, they covered the rubble accumulated by the traxes with earth. Tifnit has completely disappeared. Nothing remains of the small town described as the only one of its kind to have survived in Morocco. The circumstances of Tifnit's disappearance are widely felt as a very deep wound. Especially since the warning information from the Equipment Directorate did not reach all the occupants of the village's homes and was written exclusively in Arabic. Nothing helped, not even the prayers of this believer prostrating himself in the direction of Mecca ( photo Rachid Aït Sagh According to information posted on Facebook , a retired professor would have been mistreated by the police who allegedly ordered him to leave his house. The unfortunate man then suffered a heart attack and died, without any treatment being provided to him. The old-fashioned charm that emanated from Tifnit was appreciated. French and Belgians had even set up homes there for themselves and their friends. Here the interior of one of them, particularly successful. Riad Tifnit Acienda even met with great success despite a dilapidated environment. The inhabitants prided themselves on getting their water from their wells and producing their own electricity. Tifnit had also become a meeting place for gourmets, lovers of seafood and fish caught offshore by its approximately 120 fishermen. You could buy them cheaply on the beach or taste them in restaurants with picturesque names which were so many winks: Chez Maxim's and the succulent Bouba lobster ( our photo ), or La Tour d'Argent and Le Fouquet's. It is true that the downside of these restaurants was hygiene, which was the most often mediocre. In Tifnit, as in far too many places in the Kingdom, we also came across piles of waste ( our photo ): plastic bottles and bags, cans and leftover food of all kinds. The dilapidation of certain constructions which could have threatened ruin and the presence of squatters apparently causing a feeling of insecurity have been cited in support of the measures taken by the authorities ( our photo ). From a legal point of view, the latter have the law on their side, failing to have a sense of respect for the population and dialogue with them. The houses of which nothing remains ( photo Rachid Ait Sagh ) had been developed on the inalienable maritime property, the use of which the State can only authorize subject to an occupation authorization temporary. However, no document of this type could be produced, at least according to what we know. This means that damages will not be easy to obtain in court. However, complaints have been filed by many people before the Administrative Court of Agadir.

  • Agadir: the Trambus will start operating on December 16, 2025

Under construction since the beginning of 2021 , the new Agadir Trambus high service level line, presented in July 2024 ( our photo ), will enter service on 16 December. Initially planned for 2023 and then postponed until the end of 2024, this eagerly-awaited start-up will take place on the eve of the African Cup of Nations . This information comes from Agadir Mobilité SA , the company in charge of public transport in Greater Agadir, which is also announcing the entry into service of the first 80 new buses to replace the ageing Alsa buses. At the end of the three delivery phases, some 275 new buses will be delivered. However, Agadir Mobilité is careful to point out that this is a "provisional and indicative timetable". The 35 stations of the Trambus, also known as the Amalway, have been visible for many months along the route from the port and its vast car park to Tikiouine, to such an extent that damage has already been caused... The 30 German MAN buses will run every five minutes at this stop, from 6 am to 10 pm. It will take 45 minutes to get from one terminus to the other. Particular attention has been paid to the ticketing system, which Amalway calls "billettique". An automatic ticket dispenser ( our photo ) will allow payment by coin, banknote or credit card. Tickets will be validated inside the vehicle. Daily, weekly, monthly and annual season tickets can be purchased. Acting in an inclusive way, the Trambus will be equipped with spaces reserved for the disabled and prams. Buttons are provided for this purpose ( our photo ). It's a safe bet that the introduction of all these innovations will not be without its problems. This is particularly likely to be the case when the Trambus crosses roundabouts where it will share the road with other vehicles ( see photo ). With right of way and travelling at 20 km/h, it will require car and motorbike drivers to be patient, hopefully to avoid accidents! Another consequence of the Trambus coming into service is that vehicles that have previously used the lanes reserved for it for parking, for example on Boulevard Hassan II, will have to park elsewhere. Underground car parks will therefore undoubtedly be used more!

  • The Agadir Reconstruction Museum finally opens, and what a scenography!

Postponed many times, first due to COVID in 2021 , then in 2022 , as well as in the last two years, the opening of the ambitious Agadir Reconstruction Museum has just taken place, this February 28, 2025, on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the earthquake that destroyed the capital of Souss. Finally open! The mayor of Agadir, Aziz Akhannouch , also head of the Moroccan government, presided over the inauguration ( our photo ) of this centerpiece of the Urban Development Program . After such a long wait, the first visitors expressed their enthusiasm at the end of the sensory, visual and digital experience desired by the creators : the Parisian studio Adeline Rispal , behind the scenography, the Bouillon de culture firm in charge of cultural engineering, as well as the architect Rachid Andaloussi. The tour starts off strong : a 360° video projected shows video clips, photos and sounds ( our photo ). A slightly sloping false floor produces vibrations to create a sensory immersion that plunges the visitor into the 12 seconds that the 1960 earthquake lasted. We feel the destructive power of the tremor and grasp its impact. Sensitive or too young people have the choice of avoiding this moment. In the central space, a promenade invites a " rational and detached " reading of the events, via simple, historical and scientific explanations, in order to grasp the scale of the tragedy. Interactive terminals also allow you to consult expert reports and manipulate seismograms on screen, to have a virtual experience of creating an earthquake. In the centre, the ground is littered with chaotically stacked slabs, held by metal cables ( our photo ). These slabs show still and moving images of the rubble, as well as reports of the aftermath of the disaster. A panoramic elevator provides access to the upper floor. While the atmosphere is dark and tragic on the ground floor, it becomes brighter. The plaques that rise from the ground floor reach towards the light and become lighter as they rise. They show the various urban planning projects on the gallery ( our photo d ) and guide them to the exhibition rooms. The first highlights the collective energy of reconstruction. The great designers and builders are presented. A mediation table and a children's workshop offer an additional experience. Along the corridor, a panoramic film is broadcast on an LED screen located outside, behind the pediment of the façade ( our photo ), and opens onto a panoramic video of Agadir, slightly visible to passers-by in the street, to attract them towards the museum. Visitors also discover 12 flagship projects of the urban and architectural reconstruction of the city ( our photo ). Among these : the fire station and its high tower recognizable from afar and the Dome intended to house a wholesale market, which was never used for this purpose, but which is currently being revived. A table integrates 3D models connected to interactive terminals integrating a 3D model. Two of these terminals are located lower down to be accessible to children. Location of the museum: former building of the Al-Maghrib Bank (photo), located on General Kattani Avenue . Open every day from 9am to 5pm, except Tuesdays.

  • Great Franco-Moroccan reconciliation: the TGV will be French up to Marrakech. And up to Agadir?

Preceded by the official recognition by France, a member of the UN Security Council, of the Moroccanness of Western Sahara, solemnly confirmed before the two chambers together, Emmanuel Macron's state visit to Morocco, which has just taken place from October 27 to 30, can be described as a complete success, both for the quality of the welcome reserved by King Mohammed VI for the French president ( our photo ) and for the quantity of agreements signed between the two states , which would represent a value of some 10 billion euros. The great Franco-Moroccan reconciliation notably resulted in the conclusion of a memorandum of understanding between the National Office of Railways (ONCF) and Alstom for the delivery of 18 trains for the Kenitra-Marrakech TGV link which should be operational before the 2030 World Cup. It remains to be seen what will happen to the LGV route, currently under study, between Marrakech and Agadir. The future contract for the Kenitra-Marrakech section concerns a brand new TGV model, named Avelia Horizon ( our image ). In addition to the "reinforced exceptional partnership" that was announced and the long-standing presence of Alstom in Morocco, which supplied the rolling stock for the Tangier-Casablanca route named Al Boraq , which has been a huge success, the two levels that Avelia trains have proved decisive. Its competitors, the Spanish CAF and Talgo, as well as the South Korean Hyundai Rotem, only offered a single level. Many of the railway lots targeted by these companies, such as intercity trains and RERs, remain to be awarded. To the great displeasure of the Chinese, once considered favourites, the memorandum of understanding signed between the CEO of Alstom and the director general of ONCF ( photo Ludovic Marin/AFP ) provides for the delivery of a train that is unique in the world, insofar as Avelia's 740 seats on two levels do not compromise the speed of 300 km/h, which will make it possible to meet high traffic volumes, while presenting advanced energy efficiency. For passengers, the attractiveness of the journey will be maximum. Alstom specifies that the windows have been enlarged for a panoramic view of the landscapes ( our Alstom image ) and that the lighting will adapt to the intensity of natural light. The question that arises, however, is that of delivery times. The first commercial operation of the new TGV model from the French manufacturer is planned, if all goes well, in 2025 to connect Paris and Marseille. In the eyes of some observers, the 2029 horizon targeted by Morocco seems very ambitious, given the multiple production and delivery delays suffered by Alstom , due to the long-term effects of Covid-19 and the crisis in electronic components. On the manufacturer's side, however, it is specified that the Avelia Horizon platform "makes it possible to adapt the trains to customer requests quite easily". What about the Marrakech-Agadir LGV section in this context? Initially, a route including a passage through Essaouira had been envisaged, with Chinese cooperation ( our map ). The cost of the operation had been estimated at 2.1 billion euros , in a context of persistent competition between Beijing and Paris. Turnaround in early 2024: China Railway Design Corporation, which is responsible for carrying out a preliminary design study on civil engineering infrastructure, equipment and operating system, recommends a route under the Atlas, with only three stations: in Sidi Zouine (new airport east of Marrakech), Chichaoua and Agadir. The station in the capital of Souss is still planned in the Al Mohammadi district. There is also a stop called ‘Agadir Est’, to link the TGV and Al Massira airport. Essaouira feels cheated . The French company Egis Rail must supervise the civil engineering studies, technical installations, tunnels and operation. The planned route is 240 km (234.5 to be precise). It would require 26.3 km of bridges and some 30 km of tunnels, the longest of which would be 12.19 km. The ONCF is considering a very interesting mixed traffic : 320 km/h for passenger trains and 100 km/h for freight trains, which will require a freight station. The question of the subsequent connection with Taroudant and direction Guelmim will have to be taken into account ( our map ), this by 2040. Estimated amount of the bill: 5 billion euros. The deputy general director of the ONCF admits that "certainly, these costs are high, but they can be recovered in 25 years, notably from taxes, but also from tourist and industrial activities, as well as through the GDP which will grow". The fact remains that to date, no financial package has been published. While in terms of deadlines it is estimated that the Alstom trains will arrive just before the World Cup for the Kenitra-Marrakech section, has the train not already passed for the extension, before 2030, of the link to Agadir? Or does an unexpected event still have a chance to occur? Does the head of government and mayor of Agadir, Aziz Akhannouch , have a hidden ace up his sleeve, he who accompanied the French president during his state visit ( our photo )? The 2025 finance law could be a lead, as could the railway development plan. Or do the Chinese have a surprise in store for us, they who seem to be holding on to this market?

  • The future Marrakech-Agadir TGV will stop at Chichaoua to reach Essaouira by a 200 km/h train.

The city of Essaouira will not be forgotten by the future network of fast trains across the Kingdom. It will not be directly connected to the TGV, as we have known since the beginning of 2024 , but will benefit from a so-called high-performance train, which will run at 200 km/h from the future TGV station planned in Chichaoua. This information was just given before the House of Representatives by the Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdessamad Kayou, in response to a question posed by MP Malika Akhachkhouch. Essaouira had felt cheated , but is back in the game ( see our map ). The strongman of the city of trade winds, André Azoulay , advisor to King Mohammed VI, is surely not for nothing... The trains scheduled to run from Chichaoua to Essaouira should be those ordered from the Spanish company CAF ( our photo ). The minister clarified, however, that this project is not yet planned. Studies conducted so far, however, have concluded that the Marrakech-Essaouira journey will not exceed 1 hour and 10 minutes. As for the Marrakech-Agadir TGV line, which should in principle be served by the brand new TGV model called Avelia Horizon ( our photo ), but for which funding has still not been secured, the Minister of Transport indicated that the planning review will be completed "during the year", followed by the acquisition of the land. However, the appropriation of priority land has already been completed : 7 km in the urban perimeter of Marrakech and 20 hectares in Agadir. The future train station of the capital of Souss is still planned for the Al Mohammadi district . When will it be operational? The mystery remains.

  • Agadir continues to transform and beautify itself in all directions

The city of Agadir continues to transform and beautify itself in all directions, including its administration. The Urban Agency has just migrated from a rather anonymous building near the French Institute to a construction resembling a modern palace ( our photo ), which has just been inaugurated. The building's very contemporary architecture and its surfaces, which refer to the typical moucharabieh, do not fail to attract attention, after the Court of Appeal, when one takes the East-West bar . This four-lane artery shines with a rare beauty. Its palm trees, argan trees, grassy areas, green flowerbeds and flower groves make it an avenue whose equivalents are rarely seen in Africa, or even in Europe. Another expression of Gadiri beautification: just after the Urban Agency, the new headquarters of the Souss-Massa Regional Council is being built ( image Le Desk ), whose architecture also demonstrates a desire to express public power as much as modernity. The National Institute of Fine Arts has also just opened its doors ( our photo ). Part of the Network of artistic establishments established across the Kingdom, it is intended to welcome 80 students, future visual artists and designers, from the 2025-2026 academic year, in three bachelor's degree programs : visual arts, design and society, as well as visual narrative arts (comic strip). This boldly designed institute is located next to the Abderrahman El Youssoufi garden , which is one of six parks in Agadir that have already been rehabilitated, expanded or even created from scratch as part of the Urban Development Program launched in 2020. This garden will serve as a space for creativity for students.
